Where Do Grand National Winning Trainers Come From?
Across 181 completed runnings from 1839 to 2026, Great Britain leads with 135 winning trainers (74.6%), ahead of Ireland on 41 (22.7%) and other or unknown origins on just 5 (2.8%). The recent balance has tilted sharply, though: Irish-trained horses have won 8 of the last 10 completed runnings, driven by powerhouse yards like Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott. (No winner is counted for 1941–45, 1993 or 2020.)

Grand National Course
The Grand National course at Aintree is one of the most iconic and challenging steeplechase tracks in the world. Spanning 4 miles 2½ furlongs, the course features 30 unique fences that test the stamina, skill, and courage of both horse and rider.
The triangular-shaped circuit takes competitors on a grueling journey around the outer perimeter of Aintree Racecourse, with each fence presenting its own distinct challenge. From the famous Becher's Brook to The Chair, these legendary obstacles have become synonymous with the spirit of the Grand National.

Grand National Fences
The Grand National fences are widely regarded as the most famous steeplechase obstacles in the world of horse racing. With a heritage dating back to 1839, racing over these formidable fences at Aintree Racecourse has evolved considerably over the years, yet they continue to represent one of the most demanding tests of endurance and skill for both runners and riders.
Each fence has been carefully designed and modified over time to maintain the challenge while prioritizing safety. The unique characteristics of obstacles like Becher's Brook, The Chair, and Canal Turn have earned their place in racing folklore, contributing to the Grand National's reputation as the ultimate test in jump racing.
